Physicians choosing the practice route must have:

Ten or more years of cumulative and progressive leadership in senior or executive positions with a focus on the LEADS realms of Developing Coalitions and Systems Transformation

Documented evidence of leadership contributions that are significant and broad in scope, as well as continuing educational achievements

Good standing with one’s provincial/territorial licensing body/applicable licensing body

A minimum of 2 years’ experience in, or have made meaningful contributions to, the Canadian health care system

Once you have selected your chosen route, download and complete the appropriate forms, including the 2024 assessment form. You will be assessed through a peer-review process against a set of leadership capabilities.

These leadership capabilities are described in the widely endorsed LEADS in a Caring Environment capabilities framework. Using this framework, a three-pronged approach to the leadership assessment is employed: physicians self-assess, their referees assess and a physician peer assessment panel makes the final decision.

Choose and confirm three referees. Referees must attest to your leadership capabilities (skills, knowledge, ability) as observed in your work environment. They must include:

the individual to whom you currently report
a physician colleague
an individual of your choosing who is in a position to comment on your leadership capabilities as related to the LEADS framework

Expertise: Dr. Brisebois is a certified Wellness, Healthcare and Executive Coach, a certified mediator, a General Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine Specialist, as well as having extensive training in conflict, negotiation, equity, diversity and inclusion. She has served as the Medical Director for a large 360 bed hospital, the Medical Director of the Covenant Palliative Care Institute, as well as an Associate Chief Medical Officer of Covenant Health. I am a passionate physician who has worked tirelessly on the front lines caring for patients since 2000. Throughout my career, I have seen changes that have degraded physician autonomy and have negatively impacted our outlook. Health system culture changes and operational pressures have forced physicians to alter how they are practicing medicine, ultimately impacting our ability to focus on patient care. I have concerns regarding the sustainability of the profession and want to help.

Having been through conflict myself in my medical career, I have experienced too many situations in which little attention was paid to consistency and process. A lack of process and transparency can lead to the perception of unsatisfactory outcomes for many practitioners when facing conflict. Seeing this lack of process firsthand drove me into leadership, hoping to impact change and to support physicians facing issues in their practices.

The formal leadership journey that I embarked upon started in 2014 and ended up in my leading a team of 350 physicians through Covid pandemic. During the Covid pandemic, it became apparent that conflict for practitioners and their teams was at an all-time high, and little resource was available to support these physicians. Physicians were losing sleep, sacrificing personal relationships, and removing themselves from their workplaces due to a lack of capacity to achieve satisfactory resolution to conflict. I spent 100s of hours coaching colleagues and teams during this time, but still saw a lack of process in the system to deal with physicians’ issues.

It was clear to me in my coaching that physicians are not trained to handle conflict, leadership, or equity and inclusion. I undertook over 2 years of intense education in these areas to become a respected advocate and teacher in these areas. As society entered summer 2022, and the new generation of the pandemic met us, I made a goal to ensure that practitioners have the skills to create professional success out of conflict. These skills can support practitioners to love their careers once again by freeing time to focus on the field of medicine that they strove so hard to enter. This is my calling, and I want to share the skills and process that can also lead you to productive conflict in your life.

She is a pioneer in the area of physician health and well-being, and has been hailed as “The Doctor’s Doctor”. She is the founding director of the University Of Ottawa Faculty Of Medicine Wellness Program; as well as the Canadian Medical Association Centre for Physician Health and Wellbeing, where she served as the Chair of the Expert Advisory Group. She created the Canadian Psychiatric Association Section on Physician Health; and in 2008, she founded the International Alliance on Physician Health, bringing together experts worldwide to collaborate on work in this area. She currently serves as the Chair of the Ontario Medical Association Burnout Working Group. She has written two bestsellers – Irondoc: Practical Stress Management Tools for Physicians and The Tarzan Rule: Tips for a Healthy life in Medicine. She brings this knowledge and expertise to PEAK MD, through which she consults to organizations and corporations; and coaches senior leaders internationally. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for her innovative work in professional health, and has been awarded Distinguished Fellowships in both the Canadian and American Psychiatric Associations

An experienced leader, she is a Past President of the Ontario Psychiatric Association and the Federation of Medical Women of Canada. Sarah Smith

Sarah Smith is a Rural Family Physician and the Charting Coach for Physicians. Sarah specialises in helping Physicians improve their office efficiency, particularly in the area of completing charting same day and assisting with strategies for getting today's work done today. Within her program, Sarah also helps Physician business owners with team management and leadership with improvement in office systems and processes.

In addition to coaching, Sarah is a Physician Champion and Improvement Facilitator for her Primary Care Clinic and within the McLeod River Primary Care Network.
