Dr. Mamta Gautam
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa and President and CEO, PEAK MD
Dr. Mamta Gautam’s contributions to physician health, leadership development and healthcare management have had an extraordinary impact on the medical community. With over three decades of pioneering work in physician health, Dr. Gautam has played a pivotal role in developing and implementing strategies to address the systemic challenges that healthcare professionals face, both individually and as part of a team. Her advocacy for justice, physician wellness and leadership development has had a profound impact on healthcare organizations in Canada and globally.
Throughout her career, Dr. Gautam has dedicated herself to enhancing the role of physicians in healthcare management. She founded the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine Wellness Program, a model that has since inspired similar initiatives across Canada. Her leadership was instrumental in the establishment of the Canadian Medical Association’s Centre for Physician Health and Well-being and the development of its national Mental Health Strategy for Physicians. She continues to advise hospitals and healthcare organizations on physician wellness, leading to significant improvements in workplace satisfaction and retention.
A passionate advocate for women in leadership, Dr. Gautam co-leads Momentum, a retreat for women physicians and founded The Raft, an accredited online leadership development and peer support platform. She has also played a key role in leadership development initiatives globally, through PEAK MD, the LEADS Global program and a wide range of workshops focused on social justice and equity in healthcare. Through these programs, she has mentored countless physicians, empowering them to become effective and compassionate leaders.
Dr. Gautam’s leadership extends to global initiatives, having collaborated with colleagues in Norway, Australia and the U.S. to create innovative physician health programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was the founding Chair of the Canadian Physicians Coaches Network and launched online support forums to assist physicians during a time of crisis. Her published works, including Irondoc: Practical Stress Management Tools for Physicians and The Tarzan Rule: Tips for a Healthy Life in Medicine, have become essential resources for navigating the challenges of medical practice.
In addition to her many professional accomplishments, Dr. Gautam is widely admired for her extraordinary warmth, generosity and compassion. She brings people together and makes them feel seen and heard. As a mentor, she exemplifies the power of leadership grounded in kindness and humanity.
